“If you want to train for fighting number one, you must be fit.” Says Paddy Carson, a professional trainer for Bradal Serey, Khmer Kickboxing, in Phnom Penh. For the last four years I have been living in Phnom Penh, off and on, and Paddy has been my teacher, pushing me beyond the limits time and time again. He drills into all of his students that fitness is the key to winning fights.

The term “Kung Fu” is widely used to describe Chinese martial arts and is actually a very broad term. It does not describe just one way of fighting but many different techniques and styles. Chinese martial arts were developed in order that students could defend themselves in both day to day life and as part of their military training. Hand to hand combat and weapons practice were important components in the training of Chinese soldiers. Martial arts: arts used by the military, soon became an important part of the Country’s culture.

I feel compelled to write about one type of martial arts that I have personal

experience with.  No..... not me personally but I have just a few kids (six to be exact).  One of my boys works all the time….one is a the quiet, artistic type,  one is wild and crazy and one is lazy beyond belief.  So, I started hunting for after-school activities that would be good for each of them.

The son that was working was easy…….he works…..the artistic son was also very easy…….I sent him to art classes!!  The wild and crazy and lazy ones were more difficult.  So I remembered a conversation I had been in with some other mothers some time back where they had been talking about some sort of martial arts called Caporera (that's how I would have spelled it before this article!!)

So I took my two sons (the wild one and the lazy one) and went to check out this capoeira.  It looked sort of like martial arts and break dance combined.  It looked nothing short of cool... so I enrolled them.

Ok…….we've spoken about martial arts and autism in a previous article, and how it seems to be very effective in relieving some symptoms of autism but there is one person that has not only been a testament to that fact but has come so far that he has written two books, countless songs, created poetry, spoke at conferences (and still does) and runs his own website.  His name is Thomas A McKean.

Thomas believes that fear is the dominant emotion in autism but that people with autism often don't know what they are afraid of…..it's just a very uncomfortable feeling that sometimes overwhelmes them.

Due to the fact that martial arts focuses on the mind/body connection, this seems to have a profoundly positive effect in controlling these fears especially through the practice of meditation.

Martial Arts and Autism.(PDD-NOS)……..do these two go together?

Can they?  Apparently many parents of autistic children have used martial arts as a sports activity for their autistic children.  The surprise is that many autistic children have thrived on it…but should that be such a surprise?

Martial Arts trains it's student in motor coordination and body movements which is exactly what helps autistic children (teens and adults as well).  Martial arts can connect the mind and body together more strongly.

Persons with autism are in need of physical therapy and exercise to improve their range of motion and control over their movements.  Martial arts is used often with the mentally and physically challenged for those very reasons.
