Are you too old for martial arts?  That's a good question.  You might make excuses that you can't exercise because of your arthritis, high blood pressure or heart condition.

You may have convinced yourself that you shouldn't participate in such strenuous activity…..and you may be right, you must ask your doctor first….but he'll probably say yes (sorry!!)

Maybe you're avoiding exercise for another reason though?  You have noticed that you are sleeping in later than when you were younger and it's taking more effort to get out of the bed.  You hear your knees crinkling as you walk up stairs and sometimes you wheeze.  You want to get into shape but you're……lazy!

I know it's only February but before you know it,  summer camp registration begins which means.... summer is just around the corner. Let's look at the options….(other than boot camp!!).

You have art, music and swimming camp….there is 4-H and computer camps…so why is it that we tend to choose something that's run-of-the-mill…..maybe we just don't do enough research.

This year pick something new and exciting!!!  Give your kids a treat!! Send them to martial arts camp!  It doesn’t matter if your child has ever done martial arts or if he/she is a seasoned professional.  The only criteria (except for paying the camp bill)…..is your child's desire to learn.

Is losing weight a feasible goal to be expected from martial arts training

Considering you have to have will power to lose weight and will power takes discipline and martial arts teaches students discipline through martial arts training than it would be safe to say that martial arts is a fabulous exercise activity to lose weight!

Martial arts has a combination of components including physical, mental, spiritual and social and although some martial arts have more emphasis on physical activity than others, for example: Karate, Judo, Tai Kwon Do etc....others have more emphasis on the spiritual, for example: Tai Chi, Chi Gong, Shiatsu etc…. and still others have a combination ie: Aikido

One of the most common reasons why people are not successful with diet and exercise in an effort to lose weight is because there is a huge lack of self-worth and belief that they can do it.

Using colored belts for ranking martial arts knowledge was instituted by Jigoro Kano, the founder of  Kodokan Judo.  In the beginning only black or white belts were used.

The purpose for the belts was to signify which students could participate in which activities.  Having a  certain color of belt only noted your rank within that particular system but these rankings were not universal and never could be.

Shortly after colored belts began to be used, extra belt colors were integrated into the system.  Since Kano used it in Kodokan Judo, it has been adapted to other styles of martial arts, such as Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Shaolin Kung Fu.
