For those living in places where they can own a gun. Is it neccessary to have a permit to carry in the vehicle?

I believe that varies from state to state. I know where I live you can carry a hand gun in your car without a permit as long as you have a gun lock (or keep it in a case) and no ammo loaded.
That's voided if you have a concealed carry permit.

Long guns (rifles/shotguns) you can transport as long as they aren't loaded.

In hunting season, it's not unusual to see shotguns and rifles right up on the headache racks in trucks just in case the driver happens to see a deer along side the road.

Very similar to here where I live except we may have loaded rifles without a permit in the vehicle.

Do you need a permit in the vehicle? Some people claim that your vehicle is a "extension" of your home. Ever heard of that?

No permit required on rifles and shotguns, only pistols, and here you can only carry concealed, there is no other option for carry.

As someoe said, state to state. But I was told, to have the pistol in plain sight and tell the LEO, if you are stopped, that you have one. In plain sight cannot be charged for it being concealed.

Post edited by: Rickster, at: 2009/09/18 02:37

Sure that could work Rickster, but I wouldn't think it would matter too much if the pistol was in a gun case or had a lock on it.

All valid points. But a LEO is going to figure out how to make it bad for you if you disrepect him

Post edited by: Rickster, at: 2009/09/18 02:39

If you tell them before they ask, that you have a weapon, and be extra nice, and that you dont have any "priors", there is the higher chance, that they will not be concerned with the weapon you have.

That's probably true, however, with my luck I'd get that ONE officer who is just so happening to be having that ONE bad day...

Well, I had that one. A few times. Fortunate for me I have friends and family in "high" places.
